Can a Brit find work fruit picking in southern England? Anybody know whats it like and is it hard work?

On "Country File" on BBC TV today , UK Fruit Farmers whinged that "much of this year's fruit crop" will be "left to rot" and hundreds of thousands lost to UK economy because of lack of people willling to pick it. They are pressing government for more migrant workers to be allowed in apparently because we Brits are all supposedly "too posh" (sic) to want to do that sort of work, even though wage is 5-35 per hour at this time of year which is more than you get on JSA or OAP? Has anybody had any experience of doing this kind of work? Is it really too hard and nasty for we "lazy" Brits as inferred? How can somebody from the UK get that sort of work in the UK if he wants to try it and is there any limitation e.g. could a fit and healthy OAP do it equally to a teenager and whether male or female?
