How and why has the US dollar declined??

What is the reasoning behind the declining value of the dollar and how has it come to this. I do not understand economics. The USA is slowly degrading and we are in a recession whether the government wants to admit it or not. So how has this happened. Any enlightenment would help out.. thanks
